The Origin And History Of The Ocarina

In 1527, Aztec musicians introduced the ocarina to Europe, where Italian musician Giuseppe Donati redesigned it in 1853 to become a more complete instrument.Donati named the ocarina ocarina, which is Italian for "little goose", because the instrument sounds like a goose.

In the 19th century, English mathematician John Taylor created a fingering system for the ocarina that allowed it to play a chromatic scale with only four holes, which became known as the English fingering system.

In the 19th century, ocarina makers developed multichamber ocarinas, which may have as many as four chambers, giving slightly more than three octaves of range.These ocarinas can also sound better because the total range is split over multiple chambers, giving makers more control over the instrument's physics.
